Generator Maintenance Guide

Proper maintenance of your generator ensures reliability, efficiency, and longevity. If you're unsure about servicing your generator, follow this comprehensive guide to keep your unit running smoothly.

Petrol Generator Maintenance

Petrol generators should be serviced every six months or 100 hours, whichever comes first. You will need a service kit containing the following items (may vary by model):

  • Air Filter
  • Spark Plug
  • Petrol Filter
  • Fuel Pipe
  • Oil Filter
  • Oil Funnel
  • Spark Plug Spanner

Additional Items for Service:

  • Oil (Check manufacturer’s specifications)
  • Trickle Battery Charger
  • Oil Pan

Steps for Servicing:

  1. Remove the battery and place it on charge.
  2. Remove the sump plug and drain the oil into a clean oil pan. If the oil is still in good condition, it may be reused.
  3. Refill with clean oil through the sump plug opening.
  4. Allow the oil to settle for a few minutes to ensure the motor is lubricated.
  5. Drain the petrol via the fuel filter.
  6. Replace the fuel filter and pipe.
  7. Refill with clean petrol.
  8. Replace the dirty air filter with a new one.
  9. Remove and replace the spark plug, ensuring you do not cross-thread when screwing it in.
  10. Start the generator and let it run for a few minutes to confirm everything is working correctly.

Diesel Generator Maintenance

Diesel generators require servicing every 12 months or 300 hours. The following items are required:

  • Air Filter
  • Glow Plug
  • Diesel Filter
  • Fuel Pipe
  • Oil Filter
  • Oil Funnel
  • Glow Plug Spanner

Additional Items for Service:

  • Oil (Check manufacturer’s specifications)
  • Trickle Battery Charger
  • Oil Pan

Steps for Servicing:

  1. Remove the battery and place it on charge.
  2. Drain the oil from the sump plug into a clean oil pan. If the oil is still in good condition, it may be reused.
  3. Refill with fresh oil through the sump plug opening.
  4. Let the oil settle for a few minutes to ensure proper lubrication.
  5. Drain the diesel via the fuel filter.
  6. Replace the fuel filter and pipe.
  7. Refill with clean diesel.
  8. Replace the dirty air filter with a new one.
  9. Remove and replace the glow plug if necessary, taking care not to cross-thread.
  10. Start the generator and let it run for a few minutes to confirm smooth operation.

Important Tip:

Never run your diesel generator at less than 40% of its rated capacity. Running it at a low load for extended periods can lead to engine glazing.

Common Generator Problems & Troubleshooting

Generator Won’t Start

Possible causes and solutions:

  • Low fuel: Check and refill fuel if necessary.
  • Dead battery: Charge or replace the battery.
  • Faulty spark plug (Petrol): Clean or replace the spark plug.
  • Clogged fuel filter: Replace the fuel filter.

Generator Runs Rough

Possible causes and solutions:

  • Dirty air filter: Clean or replace the air filter.
  • Old fuel: Drain and replace with fresh fuel.
  • Carburettor issues: Clean or adjust the carburettor.

What is Engine Glazing?

Engine glazing occurs when a diesel generator operates consistently below 40% of its rated power output. This causes carbon buildup and damages the engine cylinder sleeve, reducing performance and longevity.
