The outside micrometer is designed for measuring the outside of objects, also called the outside diameter (OD). The Cclamp and the outside micrometer look similar, which opens and closes by turning an internal screw. In a micrometer, the object that you measure is clamped between the anvil (the stationary end of the clamp) and the spindle (the moving part of the clamp). Once the object is secured in the clamp, you will use the numbering system on the thimble (the handle portion) to find your measurement.

Micrometer Components

  • Frame:
    • Most micreometer frames are C-shaped to ensure perfect positioning of the barrel and the anvil. Depending on the shape the micrometer might have different shapes to suit the desirable application.

  • Anvil:
    • The anvil's job is to ensure that the spindle gravitates toward the object that is secured. It must be kept in constant contact with the part that is secured and may get damaged or chipped if no taken care of. Typically carbide-tipped for longer life span.

  • Sleeve/Barrel:
    • This part of the micrometer is often found with vernier markings to be extremely precise, being accurate to degrees such as .0001.

  • Locking Nut or Locking Levers:
    • Some micrometers come with clocking nuts and some with locking levers. The nut is helpful for securing the spindle and and keeping you aware of your measurements.

  • Spindle:
    • Being next to the measuring faces. The spindle is is in contact with the thimble and as a result, it is projected towards the anvil.

  • Thimble:
    • The thimble is the part you adjust with your thumb with graduated readings.

  • Ratchet Stop:
    • Usually found at the end of the handle and it's sole purpose is to restrict pressure and enable movement at whatever the the torque is calibrated at.
