The Eyes
Welding helmets or “hoods” are incredibly important for protection. One of the biggest risks when welding is damage to the eyes. There is a commonly known condition, “arc eye”, also called “welder’s flash”, which results when the eyes are exposed to large amounts of UV light. This can cause serious damage and inflammation to your corneas, such as pain, sensitivity to light and blurry vision, with the worst-case scenario being the loss of vision. But it’s not only your corneas that are at risk, but your retinas as well. Extended exposure to the retinas can make it difficult for your eyes to process light, resulting in blindness.
The Ears
Welding is not easy on the eyes, but it’s also not easy on the ears. Welding is a loud activity and constant noise exposure can cause hearing problems, too. A good helmet will aid in reducing the volume.
The Lungs
In addition, welding can produce dangerous fumes. This can cause lung issues, including cancer, kidney damage, and stomach ulcers. Welding helmets filter out and guard against inhaling harmful fumes.
The Skin
Lastly, welding can often create sparks and splashes, which can burn your skin. Excess heat and flying particles can cause painful physical injury, and a good welding helmet will protect your head from exposure.
